History and origin of Patola Sarees

Patolas are popular hand-woven silk sarees created in Patan, Saurashtra Gujarat. The Salvis of Patan, who belong to Jain caste, were the very first people to manufacture Patola silk. The name Patola is derived from the Sanskrit word Pattakulla. Known for its royalty, they are crafted with motifs and patterns inspired by animals and other elements of nature. It takes almost four to six months for 3 workers to weave a Patola. Hence making this saree is time-consuming and hence the price is also high. The process of weaving them is kept a family secret and rests exclusively with a special weave class who manufacture Patolas for royalty.  So there are only a few families in Patan today who are involved in the creation of Patola.

Different Weaves of Patola Sarees

The patola sarees have always been an important part of joyous rituals and occasions of Gujarat. If we talk about patola silk saris from Gujarat then we can come across two kinds of patola saris namely Rajkot patola and Patan patola. The Rajkot patola saris are vertically resist-dyed which is also known as single Ikat. The Patan patola saris are horizontally resist-dyed which is called double Ikat. Both these types of sari show variation in the process and technique of manufacture. Depending on their weave, a patola silk saree can either be manufactured using a single ikat technique or a double Ikkat technique.
